Foundation planting for a red brick cottage

Foundation beds are easy to get wrong: plant something that wants to be six feet tall under a window and you spend every year cutting it back. We picked plants that finish at the height the house wants them, so the bed keeps its shape without constant pruning.

The cobblestone edge separates bed from lawn cleanly and makes the mowing line obvious, and the mulch keeps the whole thing looking finished between visits.
